Is Your Body Lotion Hiding These Toxins? - Miracles & More

Before you rub on your favorite body lotion even one more time,it’s time to take a close look at the label. That’s because that sweet smelling lotion may not be as safe and good for your skin (or your entire body) as it looks. In fact, some of the most well-known brands of body lotion can be hiding dozens of ingredients in their products that can range from irritating to your skin to hazardous to your health.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of the top four ingredients to watch out for, so that you can ditch those dangerous lotions.

#1 - Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)

BHA is best known for its use as a food preservative, but it’s also sadly common in body lotions. Unfortunately, the compound is also an endocrine disruptor, meaning it has the ability to throw off your body’s natural hormone production. This can lead to a host of issues including dry, itchy, irritatedskin and collagen and elastin breakdown, with a resulting loss of elasticity and increased skin sagging. Even worse, BHA is also a potential carcinogen.

#2 – Formaldehyde

Think BHA in your lotion is a bad idea? Well how about formaldehyde or at least a preservative that releases formaldehyde? That’s right, many brands hide DMDM hydantoin in their lotion, which can release that same compound found in embalming fluid that’s a known carcinogen.

#3 Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben)

These synthetic chemicals are also used as preservatives in some of the most popular brands of body lotion to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus. While that might sound good, the chemicals also irritate the skin, disrupt thyroid hormones and have been linked to breast cancer. The good news is, there are ingredients that offer a safer way to achieve the preservative action these chemicals are used for, including citric acid and vitamin E.

#4 - Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is often used in everything from facial moisturizers to body lotions because it’s cheap and has a long shelf-life. However, while it’s generally considered to be safe, that’s only true if it’s well purified. If not, it may be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, which are cancer causers.
